These “hardness ions” cause three major kinds of undesired effects. Most visibly, metal ions react with soaps and calcium-sensitive detergents, hindering their ability to lather and forming a precipitate—the familiar “bathtub ring”. I just got a water softener for my shower, and oh my goodness does it make a difference to my hair! my hair is much silkier and softer. good tip about the Energy Star appliances… unfortunately I didn’t get one that is that energy efficient, but still worth it in my opinion.
